What a work by Martha Diamond is worth
Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio
Martha Diamond (1944–2023) was born in New York and grew up in Stuyvesant Town, where her father, a doctor, took her with him on drives to see his patients and gave her an early eye for light and the structure of the city. She graduated from Carleton College in Minnesota in 1964, spent a year in Paris, took an MA at New York University in 1969 and moved into a loft on the Bowery, part of the downtown world of painters and poets. Her subject became the city itself: skyscrapers, façades and grids of windows, painted from memory and invention in wide, fluid, confident strokes, so that buildings turn into presences of light and mass. Though her paintings drew notice in the 1980s alongside the Neo-Expressionists, she rejected the label, and described her pictures as her perceptions rather than her emotions. She was long admired by other painters more than by the wider public.
The paintings, mostly oil on linen or canvas and often large, are the core of her market, with works on paper and prints as well. The date and the gallery a work came from, Brooke Alexander, Robert Miller or more recently David Kordansky or Thaddaeus Ropac, place it. Broad, thin passages of paint show abrasion and old retouching clearly, so condition should be checked in raking light.
Stuyvesant Town, the Bowery and the skyline
Her first solo exhibition was at the Brooke Alexander Gallery in 1976, where she showed until the mid-1980s, followed by Robert Miller from 1985 to 1994.
Her paintings are in the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art and the Brooklyn Museum, and her first exhibition in Europe opened at the Sara Hildén Art Museum in Tampere, Finland, in September 2026.
