Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio

Eugène Delacroix (1798–1863) was born at Charenton-Saint-Maurice, near Paris, and trained in the studio of Pierre-Narcisse Guérin, where he met Géricault. The Barque of Dante, shown at the Salon of 1822, and The Massacre at Chios of 1824 made him the leader of the Romantic painters, opposed to the classicism of Ingres, and Liberty Leading the People, painted after the revolution of July 1830, is in the Louvre. In 1832 he travelled to Morocco with a French diplomatic mission, and the light, colour and people of North Africa shaped his art from then on, beginning with Women of Algiers in their Apartment of 1834. He painted great decorative schemes in Paris, for the Palais Bourbon, the Louvre's Galerie d'Apollon and the church of Saint-Sulpice, made lithographs illustrating Goethe's Faust and Shakespeare's Hamlet, and kept a celebrated journal.

Delacroix's major paintings are in museums, but he was enormously productive, and drawings, watercolours, oil sketches and prints come to market regularly. Many of them passed through the sale of his studio held in Paris in 1864, and works from it carry a small red stamp of his initials, E.D., which helps to establish their history but does not by itself prove an attribution, since the stamp has been imitated. Copies and works by followers, especially of Moroccan and animal subjects, are common. The lithographs for Faust and Hamlet are valued according to the edition and the impression, with proofs and early printings the most sought after.
