Fabian Perez

Tango, cigarettes, balconies and rain, painted from a childhood spent above his father's bar.

Fabian Perez was born in Buenos Aires in 1967 and grew up above the bars and clubs his father ran, which is the whole subject of the work: figures in evening dress on balconies at night, tango dancers, women smoking alone, men in hats under streetlights, painted in warm artificial light against deep shadow. He left Argentina in his twenties, spent years in Japan, and settled in Los Angeles. He was appointed official artist for the 2012 London Olympics by one of the official programmes, and shows principally through commercial galleries rather than the museum system.

This is a market built on published editions rather than on auction, and that is the first thing to understand about it. The great majority of what is held by owners is a limited-edition giclee on canvas or paper, produced in numbered runs, frequently hand-embellished by the studio and sold with a certificate; original oils on canvas exist and sit well above them. Retail prices from galleries and secondary values diverge considerably in this segment, and owners are routinely surprised by that. Documentation from the original publisher is essential.

If you own a work by Fabian Perez

Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation costs nothing and commits you to nothing.

Whitebank Fine Art is a London art advisory and gallery. A photograph and a few details are enough to begin — a valuation carries no obligation to proceed.
