Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. Bio
Ganesh Haloi was born in Jamalpur, Mymensingh, in what is now Bangladesh, in 1936, and moved to Calcutta in 1950 after Partition. He studied at the Government College of Art and Craft, Calcutta, from 1952 to 1956, and in 1957 joined the Archaeological Survey of India, spending six years copying the murals in the Buddhist caves at Ajanta. He returned to Calcutta in 1963 and taught at the Government College of Art and Craft until his retirement. His early landscapes drew on memories of his East Bengal homeland, and with the Metascape series of 1978 he moved gradually from realism to abstraction. He works in gouache, tempera and ink on paper and board, including handmade paper, building earth-toned compositions from lines, circles and triangles that recall farmland, plant life, rock strata and sacred architecture. He has been a member of the Society of Contemporary Artists since 1971. He showed at documenta 14 in Athens and Kassel in 2017, and his work is in the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art and the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi. Represented by Akar Prakar, he lives and works in Kolkata.
Most of his work is unique gouache, tempera and ink on paper or board, alongside earlier oils on canvas, scrolls, a few bronzes and some lithographs. Thin and handmade papers crease, discolour and fade, so condition and framing matter. Have the date of the work, a gallery invoice and any exhibition history ready, and for a lithograph note the edition number and signature.
