What a work by Peter Halley is worth

Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio

Peter Halley was born in New York City in 1953 and went to school in Andover, Massachusetts. He studied at Yale, graduating in 1975, took an MFA at the University of New Orleans in 1978 and lived in New Orleans until 1980. Back in New York he came to prominence in the mid-1980s among the Neo-Conceptualist artists who showed in the East Village, at spaces such as International with Monument, alongside Jeff Koons, Haim Steinbach and Ashley Bickerton. His paintings turn the square of geometric abstraction into icons he calls prisons and cells, joined by bands he calls conduits, as a picture of the social structures of urban and digital space. He paints them in bright, often Day-Glo colours, with Roll-a-Tex giving the cells a stucco-like texture. His critical writing drew on Michel Foucault and Jean Baudrillard, he published index Magazine from 1996 to 2005, and from 2002 to 2011 he was director of graduate studies in painting and printmaking at the Yale University School of Art. In the 1990s he began making large installations with digital prints. He lives and works in New York.

His paintings are in acrylic, fluorescent colour and Roll-a-Tex on canvas, often in several joined parts. Fluorescent colours fade in light, so check for fading and keep a work out of direct sun. A buyer will want the title, the date, the number of parts and the gallery invoice.
