What a work by Guglielmo Castelli is worth

Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio

Guglielmo Castelli was born in Turin in 1987 and lives and works there. He trained in set design at the Accademia Albertina di Belle Arti in Turin and worked as a set and costume designer for theatre and film before turning to painting, and the stage stays in the pictures: elongated, dissolving figures, often young, posed in shallow spaces like sets, among drapery, furniture and fragments of architecture, in thin, liquid paint that lets one form bleed into the next. His sources include literature, theatre and the history of painting. Solo exhibitions have followed at the Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa in Venice and the Villa Medici in Rome in 2024, the Castello di Rivoli in 2025 and the Kunsthalle Wien in 2026, his first institutional exhibition outside Italy.

His paintings are unique and mostly on canvas, from small to very large. Mendes Wood DM represents him, with Sylvia Kouvali, and a provenance through either, with the date and exhibition history, is what a buyer checks. The paint is thin and translucent in places, so abrasion and retouching show.

Turin, the stage and Sweet Baby Motel

Improving Songs for Anxious Children, at the Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa, opened in April 2024 to coincide with the Venice Biennale, and Sweet Baby Motel at the Kunsthalle Wien added sculpture and a site-specific mural to the paintings.

Mendes Wood DM gave him Demonios Familiares in New York in 2023, and the Aspen Art Museum included him in A Lover's Discourse the same year.

Children's books, Vogue Italia and Palazzetto Tito

Castelli was illustrating children's books by the age of fifteen, and later drew fashion illustrations for Vogue Italia. In 2016, at twenty-eight, he was named in Forbes's 30 Under 30 Europe list for the arts.

Improving Songs for Anxious Children was hung at the Palazzetto Tito in Venice and set the paintings among scale models, textiles and knitted pieces drawing on stage design, fables and literature. His work has also been in group exhibitions at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris and the Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin, and it is held by the Blenheim Art Foundation at Woodstock, the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in Turin and the Marciano Art Foundation in Los Angeles.
