What a work by Heinz Mack is worth

Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio

Heinz Mack was born in Lollar, in Hesse, in 1931 and studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf from 1950 to 1956. In 1957 he and Otto Piene began a series of evening exhibitions in their Düsseldorf studio which grew, with Günther Uecker, into the group ZERO and an international movement that took in Yves Klein, Lucio Fontana, Piero Manzoni and Jean Tinguely. His work with light, reflection and movement made him a central figure of op, light and kinetic art, in reliefs that catch and break up light, rotating light dynamos and monumental outdoor sculptures. He showed at documenta in 1964 and 1977 and represented Germany at the Venice Biennale in 1970, and since 1991 he has also made brightly coloured abstract paintings in acrylic.

Reliefs and kinetic works need careful handling, since scratches and dents to reflective surfaces are very visible and motors may need servicing; whether a kinetic piece still works should be stated. Paintings, works on paper and prints also appear. Labels on the back, a certificate and the date of the work help to place it.
