Helen Beard valuation

Helen Beard was born in Birmingham in 1971, studied at Bournemouth and Poole College of Art and Design, and spent some fifteen years as an assistant art director in film while keeping up her own practice in paint, collage and needlepoint. She lives and works in Brighton. Her paintings take explicit sexual encounters and render them as interlocking planes of saturated colour, so that the image reads first as abstraction. In 2018 she was one of three artists in True Colours at Newport Street Gallery in London.
Original paintings lead, with needlepoint works and a body of prints and editions alongside them. For paintings, title, date and dimensions matched to the gallery's or the studio's records establish the work; for editions, the numbering, signature and publisher do. The flat, high-key colour shows abrasion and fading readily, so surface condition matters, and works on paper and textiles need the usual care with light and framing.
