BÄST valuation

BÄST is a Brooklyn artist who has worked anonymously since the 1990s and whose method is collage: printed matter, advertising, packaging and found paper, layered, pasted, overpainted and torn back so the surface reads as accumulated rather than composed. The street work took the form of pasted pieces around New York, and the studio work carries the same construction onto panel and canvas.
Unique collage works are the market, with a smaller output of editions. Collage raises conservation questions that painting does not — the layers are paper and adhesive, they were not made to archival standards, and light and humidity act on them faster than on a canvas — so condition assessment matters and framing should be conservation-grade. The work is frequently unsigned on the face, so provenance and gallery documentation carry more weight here than for most artists in the field.
