What a work by Hernan Bas is worth

Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio

Hernan Bas was born in Miami in 1978 and graduated from the New World School of the Arts there in 1996, leaving the Cooper Union in New York after a single semester. His first solo exhibition at a commercial gallery was at Fredric Snitzer in Miami in 2001, and he was in the Whitney Biennial of 2004 and the Saatchi Gallery's The Triumph of Painting the following year. His paintings return again and again to slender, androgynous young men — dandies and waifs, partly drawn from his own experience — set in dense, decorative landscapes and interiors, with subjects taken from literature, the paranormal, the lives of saints and the decadence of the 1890s. The pictures often carry long, literary titles. He moved his studio from Miami to Detroit in 2010.

The large paintings, usually acrylic and mixed media on linen, are what the market looks at first; works on paper and drawings come up too, alongside a smaller body of photographs and films. He has been represented by Lehmann Maupin, Victoria Miro and Perrotin among others, and a provenance through one of them and the date of the work are what a buyer checks. The painted surfaces show abrasion and staining clearly.

Miami, the Rubell Family Collection and Detroit

The Rubell Family Collection in Miami gave him a major presentation in 2007, which travelled to the Brooklyn Museum in 2008, and he was in The Collectors, at the Nordic and Danish pavilions of the Venice Biennale, in 2009.

His named series include Bloodwerk and Bright Young Things, and his work is in the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Hirshhorn Museum.
