What a work by Jennifer Bartlett is worth

Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio

Jennifer Bartlett (1941–2022) was born Jennifer Losch in Long Beach, California. She studied at Mills College in Oakland, where she met Elizabeth Murray, and at the Yale School of Art and Architecture, where her teachers included Josef Albers, Jack Tworkov, Jim Dine and Richard Serra; she took her MFA there in 1965 and settled in New York. From 1968 she painted on one-foot-square steel plates coated with white baked enamel and silkscreened with a quarter-inch grid, combining them into large works that move between abstraction and images of houses, trees and the sea. Rhapsody, made in 1975 and 1976 from nearly a thousand plates, was shown at Paula Cooper Gallery in 1976 and is in the Museum of Modern Art. Her series In the Garden began with more than 200 drawings of the garden of a villa in Nice, and she also wrote a novel, History of the Universe (1985). Her first retrospective was at the Walker Art Center in 1985, and her work is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney and Tate. She lived in New York and Paris and later settled in Amagansett, Long Island.

Besides the plate works and paintings she made many prints: screenprints, woodcuts, drypoints, aquatints and lithographs. At Sea, Japan (1980) was made with master printers in Japan and combines screenprints and colour woodcuts across six panels. For a print, check the signature, edition number, publisher and printer, and whether the paper has faded or yellowed in its frame. For an enamel plate work, look for chips at the edges and corners.
