Bio
Ida Ekblad was born in Oslo in 1980. She studied fine art at Central Saint Martins in London in 2001, graduated from the National Academy of Art in Oslo in 2007 and attended the Mountain School of Arts in Los Angeles in 2008. She works in painting, sculpture, installation, performance, film and poetry. Her paintings are dense with winding, twisted lines and bold colour, sometimes in puff paint on canvas, with figure-like and landscape-like forms emerging; her sculptures are assembled from found waste or made in marble and bronze. She draws on Norwegian fairy tales, craft techniques, street art, cartoons and her own childhood memories, and on CoBrA and Abstract Expressionism. She took part in the Venice Biennale in 2011 and 2017, and has had solo exhibitions at the National Museum in Oslo, the Museo Tamayo in Mexico City, the Kunsthalle Zürich and, in 2026, The Hepworth Wakefield. Her work is in the Centre Pompidou, Moderna Museet, the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art and the British Museum. In 2016 she founded SCHLOSS, an exhibition space and record label in Oslo, where she lives and works.
The paintings are unique works, and the sculptures are made from found waste, bronze or marble. Raised puff paint and thick layers of colour can be scuffed or crushed, so check the surface and ask how a canvas has been stored and moved. Keep the invoice from the gallery, such as Galerie Max Hetzler, Karma International or Peder Lund, and note the title and date of the work.
