What a work by Mandy El-Sayegh is worth

Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio

Mandy El-Sayegh was born in Selangor, Malaysia, in 1985 and lives and works in London, where she took a BA in fine art at the University of Westminster in 2007 and an MA in painting at the Royal College of Art in 2009. She works in painting, table vitrines, installation, performance and video, collaging fragments of information together to see how meaning forms between them: newspapers, advertisements, aerial maps, pages of anatomy books and her father's calligraphy, with painted passages and materials such as latex that read like skin. In the Net-Grid paintings a hand-painted grid is laid over this debris, both ordering and hiding it, a reply to the grid of modernist painting; the vitrines arrange objects as quasi-archives, and the same motifs return from work to work in new contexts. Her first institutional solo exhibition, Cite Your Sources, was commissioned by Chisenhale Gallery in London in 2019, and she was in the British Art Show of 2022. Tate acquired two of her paintings, among them Net-Grid (my dad knows nothing), the same year.

Her paintings are layered with collaged paper, newsprint and latex, materials that yellow, become brittle or change colour with age and light, so condition and the stability of the surface matter, and works should be hung away from direct sunlight. Vitrines and installations depend on their components and arrangement, which should be documented. A work's date and series, and a provenance through Thaddaeus Ropac, which represents her, are what buyers look for.
