What a work by Joe Bradley is worth
Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio
Joe Bradley was born in Kittery, Maine, in 1975 and graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1999. He first came to attention with paintings built from monochrome canvases joined together into figures — robots, totems, stick men — shown in the Whitney Biennial of 2008. The same year he showed the Schmagoo Paintings in New York: single crude marks and symbols in grease pencil on raw canvas. Since then he has worked mainly in abstraction, oil and oil stick worked into the canvas in layers and scraped back, with figurative shapes surfacing and disappearing. He has called his work intentionally shoddy, though the colour and surfaces are carefully judged. He was also the lead singer of the hard rock band Cheeseburger.
Three bodies of work come to market and each is distinct: the early monochrome assemblages, the Schmagoo drawings on canvas, and the abstract paintings that make up most of his output since. Works on paper, often in crayon and grease pencil, are common. He has shown with Canada, Gagosian, Petzel and Xavier Hufkens, and the date and the gallery a work came from are the first things to establish.
Kittery, RISD and Schmagoo
He was in The Forever Now, the Museum of Modern Art's survey of contemporary painting, in 2014, and MoMA PS1 gave him a solo exhibition a few years after his first New York gallery show.
His later solo exhibitions include Krasdale at Gagosian in New York in 2016, Day World at Gagosian in London in 2018 and Time-Slip at Petzel in New York in 2021.
