Jonas Wood
Flattened interiors, pot plants and basketball courts, painted from his own collages.
Jonas Wood was born in Boston in 1977, studied psychology before an MFA at the University of Washington, and has worked in Los Angeles since 2003. He paints from photographs he cuts up and reassembles into collages, which flattens the space and gives the finished picture its stacked, patterned, slightly impossible perspective. The subjects are domestic and personal: his own studio and living rooms, sports memorabilia, basketball courts and players, portraits of family, and above all pot plants, many of them in vessels made by his wife, the ceramicist Shio Kusaka.
One of the strongest markets of his generation, which rose sharply in the late 2010s and has been closely watched since; date of acquisition and provenance to the primary gallery both matter here. Large unique oils and acrylics on canvas lead, with the plant and interior subjects the most sought. Works on paper and the collages the paintings come from are a distinct body. There is a significant print output in screenprint and lithograph, published in editions of around fifty to a hundred and fifty, and it is well documented.
