Josh Sperling was born in 1984 and works from Cohoes in upstate New York, making shaped works in which canvas is stretched over cut plywood armatures so that the painting projects from the wall as an object. The vocabulary is hard-edged and cheerful — squiggles, benday-style dots, stacked curves in flat saturated colour — and owes something to both Minimalism and Pop without belonging to either.
Unique shaped works lead. Their construction is the practical fact that governs everything else: they are built objects, the edges and the sides are finished and visible, and any knock to a corner or edge is conspicuous and difficult to make good. Crating and transit therefore cost more than the wall size suggests. Editions exist, including three-dimensional multiples, and are a separate and more accessible market. Gallery documentation is generally thorough and should stay with the piece.
