What a work by Kaloki Nyamai is worth
Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio
Kaloki Nyamai was born in Kitui, Kenya, in 1985 and lives and works in Nairobi. His mother taught him to draw and paint, and his grandmother, a traditional Kamba singer and storyteller, introduced him to oral traditions and rituals. He studied at the Buruburu Institute of Fine Arts in Nairobi and worked in design and other creative fields before turning fully to painting. His large paintings and mixed-media installations, made with acrylic paint, sisal rope, photo transfers and stitched yarn, often hang free, blurring painting, sculpture and installation, and they explore Kenya's histories and collective memory through Kamba heritage; he titles his works in Kikamba. He showed at the Kenyan Pavilion at the 59th Venice Biennale in 2022 and in the Unlimited section of Art Basel in 2023, and has had solo exhibitions at Galerie Barbara Thumm in Berlin, James Cohan in New York in 2024 and the Norval Foundation in Cape Town. He took part in the Sharjah Biennial in 2025, and his work is in the Dallas Museum of Art and the Southern African Foundation for Contemporary Art.
His works combine canvas, acrylic, rope, yarn and photographic transfers, and many are made to hang free. Check stitching, rope and transfers for loose or damaged areas, and keep a work out of direct sun. The title, date and gallery invoice should stay with it.
