Aboudia valuation

Ivorian painter of crowded, graffiti-scrawled canvases of children and street life in Abidjan.

Aboudia, born Abdoulaye Diarrassouba in Côte d'Ivoire in 1983, studied at the School of Applied Arts in Bingerville, graduating in 2003, and at the Institut des Arts in Abidjan in 2005, after his father had turned him out of home for wanting to be an artist.

What a work by Aboudia is worth

Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio

Aboudia, born Abdoulaye Diarrassouba in Côte d'Ivoire in 1983, studied at the School of Applied Arts in Bingerville, graduating in 2003, and at the Institut des Arts in Abidjan in 2005, after his father had turned him out of home for wanting to be an artist. His paintings mix collage, newsprint, crayon and acrylic into dense, scrawled compositions of children and figures drawn in the manner of street graffiti and the Nouchi slang culture of Abidjan's young. He first reached an international audience in 2011, when he painted the fighting around his studio during the siege of Abidjan after the disputed presidential election. He works between Abidjan and Brooklyn and has exhibited in New York, London, Barcelona and Copenhagen.

He is prolific and his work appears at auction regularly, so the date, size and provenance through his galleries are the main points of identification. Works on paper and collages are common.

Bingerville, the siege of Abidjan and Brooklyn

In 2012 he worked with the Ivorian artist Frédéric Bruly Bouabré on a series of paintings shown in Abidjan.

His paintings of the siege, made in 2011 as the conflict reached his neighbourhood, were shown in London later that year.
