What a work by Wangechi Mutu is worth

Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio

Wangechi Mutu was born in Nairobi in 1972 and educated at Loreto Convent Msongari and the United World College of the Atlantic in Wales. She moved to New York, studied at the New School and Parsons, took a BFA at the Cooper Union in 1996 and an MFA in sculpture at Yale in 2000, and since 2015 has worked between Brooklyn and Nairobi. Her collages on Mylar build hybrid female figures from fashion and pornographic magazines, medical diagrams and natural-history illustration, and her sculpture, film and performance extend the same imagined world. In 2019 her four bronze figures The NewOnes, will free Us filled the empty niches of the façade of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and in 2023 the New Museum in New York gave her a retrospective, Intertwined.

Collages and works on paper are the core of her market and appear at auction, along with prints and some sculpture. Provenance through her galleries is usual, and the condition of the collage materials matters.

Nairobi, Yale and the Met façade

Her first solo exhibition at a major North American museum opened at the Art Gallery of Ontario in 2010, and the retrospective A Fantastic Journey was shown at the Nasher Museum of Art in 2013.

Since 2016 her Sentinel series of tall standing figures has used clay, wood and found materials. Her collage Yo Mama of 2003 is in the Museum of Modern Art.
