Larry Zox
American hard-edge painter of asymmetric colour bands, who then loosened them into stained diagonals.
Larry Zox was born in Des Moines in 1937 and came to New York at the end of the 1950s. He is associated with the hard-edge and Colour Field painters of the 1960s, and the Rotation and Diamond Cut series of that decade set bands and wedges of flat colour into asymmetric arrangements that deliberately refuse the symmetry the manner usually implies. From the 1970s the edges softened and the paint was stained and poured into diagonal sweeps on raw canvas. He was included in the Whitney Annuals repeatedly and in the Systemic Painting exhibition at the Guggenheim, and died in 2006.
An American market that has strengthened notably as the second rank of Colour Field painting has been reassessed, with the 1960s hard-edge works leading. Those depend on clean edges and flat acrylic fields, so retouching and edge wear are conspicuous. The stained works of the 1970s are painted into raw or barely primed canvas, which means the pigment is in the fabric rather than on it, staining is permanent and cleaning is not possible. Works on paper are numerous. Signature and date are usually on the reverse.
