Otto Zitko
Draws continuous red and black lines straight onto walls, floors and ceilings until the room is the drawing.
Otto Zitko was born at Linz in 1959 and studied in Vienna. His work is drawing pursued past the point where a sheet of paper can hold it: a continuous looping line, usually in red or black oil stick and lacquer, run directly onto the walls, floor and ceiling of a space until the architecture is entirely covered and the room reads as a single unbroken gesture. He also makes works on aluminium panels using the same vocabulary, which are the portable form of the practice, and has installed permanent wall works in Austrian and German institutions.
The wall works are site-specific, are made and then destroyed, and are not objects that trade; the practical market is the aluminium panels and the works on paper, which use the same line and are how the practice is collected. Panels are unique, and their surfaces — oil stick and lacquer on bare or lightly coated metal — mark and scratch readily and cannot be retouched invisibly, so condition matters. The market is principally Austrian and German with strong institutional representation. Signature and date are on the reverse.
