Martin Parr was born in Epsom in 1952 and studied at Manchester Polytechnic. The Last Resort, made at New Brighton between 1983 and 1985, changed British documentary photography by abandoning black and white social concern for saturated colour, ring flash and close-up detail, and it split opinion sharply — his election to Magnum was contested on the grounds that the work mocked its subjects. The projects since have been consistent in method: food, tourism, boredom, class, consumption, photographed at close range in bright artificial light. He founded the Martin Parr Foundation in Bristol, published a very large number of books, and died in Bristol in December 2025.
Prints are editioned and are typically colour, which brings its own considerations: chromogenic prints from the period and later pigment prints of the same image are distinct, and the edition size is not consistent across images. The books are a substantial collecting field in themselves, particularly the early and small-run titles, and signed copies and first editions are traded seriously. Signature is usually on the verso or the mount with edition and date, and Magnum and Foundation documentation is the usual reference.
Books, small prints and the estate
Parr's books are the most widely held part of his work and the easiest to value precisely, because editions are recorded and condition is easy to judge. First editions of the early titles, Bad Weather from 1982 and The Last Resort from 1986, are the most sought after, and a signed or inscribed copy is worth more again. Later titles were printed in larger numbers and often reprinted, so the edition statement and the state of the dust jacket matter.
Small signed prints are the other common category. Magnum's periodic print sales have offered small signed photographs by its members at modest prices, and many owners have one of these rather than a gallery edition. They are genuine and collected, and they are a different object from an editioned exhibition print. Since his death in December 2025, the Martin Parr Foundation in Bristol is the natural reference for questions about prints and the archive.
