Bio
Rana Begum was born in Sylhet, Bangladesh, in 1977 and moved with her family to Hertfordshire in 1985. She studied art and design at the University of Hertfordshire and painting at Chelsea College of Art and Design, and took a master's degree at the Slade in 2002. Her work sits between sculpture, painting and architecture: folded and painted panels of steel and aluminium, reliefs in lacquer and wood, and suspended forms in coloured mesh, all concerned with the way light, colour and geometry change as the viewer moves around them. She also makes fine line drawings on tracing paper. The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts in Norwich gave her a solo exhibition, Space Light Colour, in 2017, the year she won the Abraaj Group Art Prize, and she was elected a Royal Academician in 2020.
Her works are numbered rather than titled, and the number, materials and dimensions should match the certificate or gallery invoice. Painted metal shows every scratch and dent, and the mesh pieces need careful handling and packing; any retouching should be declared.
