What a work by Robert Mangold is worth

Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio

Robert Mangold was born in North Tonawanda, New York, in 1937. He trained at the Cleveland Institute of Art from 1956 and at Yale University, taking his BFA in 1961 and his MFA in 1963, and moved to New York, where in 1962 he worked as a guard at the Museum of Modern Art. In 1965 he was included in the first major exhibition of what was called Minimal art, at the Jewish Museum. His early works were monochrome constructions on plywood and masonite, such as Grey Window Wall (1964); in 1968 he turned to acrylic and moved onto stretched canvas, and from 1970 he worked with shaped canvases, combining their edges with drawn and implied lines to make overlapping geometric forms. He works in extended series, carried through paintings and works on paper, among them the Column Structures of 2006 and 2007. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1969, and in 1971 the Guggenheim Museum gave him his first solo museum exhibition. He made his first prints at Crown Point Press in 1972 and has also worked with Pace Editions and Brooke Alexander Editions.

Besides paintings in acrylic and pencil on canvas, often shaped or in several panels, he makes works on paper and prints. For a print, note the edition number, the publisher and the paper. Pale, flat colour shows scuffs and marks easily, and a buyer will want the title, date and gallery invoice.
