Ronnie Wood was born in Hillingdon in 1947 and studied at Ealing Art College before the music; both his brothers were painters, and he has said the drawing came first and never stopped. He has worked throughout his career in the Faces, the Rolling Stones and beyond, producing portraits of his bandmates and of other musicians, tour and studio drawings, landscapes and large expressive canvases, and has exhibited regularly in commercial galleries in London and internationally since the 1980s. His work also appears on record sleeves and tour material.
The market here is shaped by the music as much as by the painting, and the two value things differently. It is dominated by editions: signed limited-edition prints and giclees published in numbered runs, frequently hand-embellished, sold through galleries with certificates, and issued in substantial quantities over decades. Original oils, acrylics and drawings are far scarcer and sit well above them. Owners frequently overestimate the editions. Documentation from the original publisher, and any provenance connecting a work to a specific tour or sitter, is what carries value.
Genesis Publications and Castle Fine Art
Much of Wood's published work has come through two firms. Genesis Publications, the Guildford publisher of signed limited-edition books, has issued books of his work with signed prints, among them Ronnie Wood: Artist, a retrospective in leather-bound editions of 250 each, paired with a framed portrait print of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards or Wood with Charlie Watts, and Live Studies, a portfolio of signed and numbered lithographs from pen-and-ink portraits.
Castle Fine Art, the British gallery chain, publishes and sells his signed limited editions, and in 2020 offered a Classic Collection of hand-signed prints from earlier sold-out releases, gathered from his back catalogue and private collection. For any edition, the publisher's certificate and the edition number identify it, and a print from one of the book sets should be described with its book.
Yiewsley, Sketch Club and Drury Lane
Wood was born in Hillingdon into a family of bargees who worked the rivers and canals, and he has said his generation was the first of the family born on land. He grew up on Whitehorn Avenue in Yiewsley and went to St Martin's secondary modern in West Drayton, where one of his drawings was chosen for the BBC's Sketch Club. Winning one of the programme's competitions was what he calls his "awakening to art". His elder brothers, Art and Ted, were graphic artists as well as musicians, and all three studied at Ealing, where Freddie Mercury and Pete Townshend also studied in the 1960s.
He played lead guitar with the Birds from 1964, joined the Jeff Beck Group in 1967 and then Faces, and became a member of the Rolling Stones in 1975, officially in 1976. His paintings, drawings and prints often show figures from popular culture, and he drew the cover art for Eric Clapton's box set Crossroads in 1988. Several of his paintings, among them one commissioned by Andrew Lloyd Webber, hang at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. The critic Brian Sewell called him an accomplished and respectable artist, and The South Bank Show gave a whole programme to his art.
