What a work by Sabine Moritz is worth
Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio
Sabine Moritz was born in Quedlinburg, in what was then East Germany, in 1969, and spent part of her childhood on the prefabricated housing estate of Neulobeda, near Jena, before her family moved to the West in 1985. She studied at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Offenbach from 1988 and at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf from 1991, first under Markus Lüpertz and from 1992 under Gerhard Richter, whom she married in 1995. Her first important body of work, made at the academy in 1991 and 1992, is Lobeda, more than a hundred drawings reconstructing the estate from memory; Hans Ulrich Obrist and the publisher Walther König found them in her studio in 2009. Since then she has painted roses and lilies, ships, helicopters and scenes of war taken from news images, and, increasingly, abstract canvases of layered and scraped colour that she calls psychological landscapes. She lives and works in Cologne.
The abstract paintings are unique oils on canvas, built up and scraped back in layers, and their surfaces need the same care as any heavily worked paint; the flower paintings, the figurative pictures and a large body of drawings sit beside them. Her galleries include Marian Goodman, Pilar Corrias and König, and a provenance through one of them, with the work's date and title, is the usual starting point.
Lobeda, Düsseldorf and Cologne
Richter painted her several times in the mid-1990s, in Reader and Small Bather of 1994 and in the series S. with Child of 1995, which shows her with their eldest son.
Lobeda was published as a book by Walther König in 2010, and in 2022 the Museum Lyonel Feininger in her birthplace, Quedlinburg, returned to it in Lobeda oder die Rekonstruktion einer Welt.
