What a work by Sean Landers is worth
Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio
Sean Landers was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1962 and grew up in nearby Palmer. He took his BFA at the Philadelphia College of Art in 1984 and his MFA at Yale in 1986, where his contemporaries included John Currin, Lisa Yuskavage and Richard Phillips. In the early 1990s he wrote stream-of-consciousness texts in ballpoint on legal pads, full of ambition, self-doubt and jokes at his own expense; one became the book [sic], shown in full at Andrea Rosen Gallery in New York in 1993, and he went on to paint such texts onto canvas. That candour got him called a slacker artist, a label he has said never fitted. His later paintings set the handwriting beside recurring characters, among them the clown alone in a boat of Alone, of 1996, and rabbits, owls, bears and a wooden boy. He has exhibited at the Whitney Museum of American Art and the New Museum, and his work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art and Tate Modern.
Paintings on canvas are the core of what comes to market, with drawings, works on paper, the early text pieces, and a smaller number of bronze and ceramic sculptures. For a text painting the date matters, because the work of the early 1990s is the work that made his name; for a figure painting, the series it belongs to. Works sold through Andrea Rosen Gallery in the 1990s, and through Petzel since, usually carry the paperwork a buyer wants to see.
