What a work by Titian is worth

Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio

Titian (about 1490–1576), Tiziano Vecellio, came from Pieve di Cadore in the Dolomites and trained in Venice in the circle of Giovanni Bellini, working alongside Giorgione. His Assumption of the Virgin for the church of the Frari, unveiled in 1518, made him the leading painter in Venice, and for six decades he painted altarpieces, mythologies and portraits for the city, for the dukes of Ferrara and Urbino, for the Emperor Charles V and for his son Philip II of Spain, for whom he made the mythologies he called poesie. Two of them, Diana and Actaeon and Diana and Callisto, are owned jointly by the National Gallery and the National Galleries of Scotland. His late works, painted with broken, loosely handled brushwork, were studied by later painters from Rubens and Velázquez to Rembrandt.

Titian ran a large workshop, which included members of his family, and successful compositions were repeated in several versions, some largely by him and some largely by assistants, so the question with any Titian-like picture is how much of it he painted. Venetian painters who followed him, such as Paris Bordone and Polidoro da Lanciano, and centuries of copyists account for much of what comes to market under his influence. He also designed woodcuts, among them the Triumph of Faith, and many engravers made prints after his paintings; early impressions of the woodcuts are rare. Technical examination of the canvas, the ground and the paint layers, together with a documented history, settles most attributions.
