What a work by Ahmed Mater is worth

Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio

Ahmed Mater was born in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, in 1979 and grew up in the Asir region in the south. He qualified in medicine at King Khalid University in Abha in 2006, worked as a doctor and trained as an artist at the city's Al-Meftaha Arts Village. He works across photography, video, painting, calligraphy, sculpture, installation and land art. His Illuminations series frames hospital X-rays with illuminated Quranic text, Magnetism draws magnetised iron filings towards a black cube that refers to the Ka'aba, and Desert of Pharan documents the redevelopment of Mecca. He co-founded the Shatta collective in 2001 and Edge of Arabia in 2003, and was founding director of Misk Art Institute. He showed at the Venice Biennale in 2009 and 2011, and has had solo exhibitions at the Smithsonian, the Brooklyn Museum, Galleria Continua and UCCA Edge in Shanghai. His work is in the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Centre Pompidou. In 2024 France made him a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. He lives and works in Riyadh.

His output runs from paintings and works made with hospital X-rays to photographs, digital prints, sculpture and installation. For a photograph or print, record the edition number, size and signature, and keep any certificate the studio issued with it. Photographs and X-ray works scratch easily and should be kept out of strong light, so condition matters. A gallery invoice and the date of the work should go with it.
