Tomokazu Matsuyama was born in Gifu in 1976, moved between Japan and the United States as a child, and works from New York. The paintings set the compositional habits of Japanese classical art — flattened space, decorative pattern, a certain formality of pose — against the colour and imagery of American consumer culture, and the resulting hybrid is deliberately unresolved: it is a picture of belonging to two places and entirely to neither.
Unique paintings on canvas lead, with sculpture and public installation alongside and a body of editions below. The paintings are densely patterned and flatly painted, which makes surface condition more visible than on a worked impasto surface — scuffs and stretcher-bar marks show. Scale is often substantial and should be reckoned into shipping and installation costs.
