What a work by William Monk is worth

Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio

William Monk was born in Kingston upon Thames in 1977. He took a BA in fine art at Kingston University from 1997 to 2000, at a time when few of his fellow students were still painting, and after a spell exploring film he went to De Ateliers in Amsterdam from 2004 to 2006. He won the Royal Award for Painting (Koninklijke Prijs voor Vrije Schilderkunst) in 2005 and the Jerwood Contemporary Painters award in 2009, and his early exhibitions, with GRIMM, were mostly in the Netherlands. James Cohan Gallery showed him in New York in 2014, and since 2019 he has exhibited with Pace in London, New York, Los Angeles, Hong Kong and Tokyo. His stylised oil paintings range from real references, such as the cockpit of the Enola Gay in Hive (2006) or the Neuendorf House in House of Nowhere III, to entirely imaginary spaces, and he often works in long series in which repetition breaks down the figuration. In 2024 the Long Museum in Shanghai gave him Psychopomp, his first solo exhibition in mainland China, which travelled to Nanjing and Shunde.

His works are oil paintings on canvas, from small pictures to large pieces in long series. Check the paint surface for scuffs and cracking, and keep the title, the date, the series it belongs to and the gallery invoice with the work.
