Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. Bio
Yun Hyong-keun (1928–2007) was born in Cheongwon, now part of Cheongju, in central Korea. He received his first art lessons at Cheongju Commercial School and in 1947 entered the College of Fine Arts at Seoul National University, where he met the painter Kim Whanki, who became his teacher and, in 1960, his father-in-law. His early years were marked by hardship: he was arrested and expelled for joining student protests in 1948 and 1949, and during the Korean War he was condemned to execution and escaped at the last moment. He later graduated from Hongik University and became associated with Dansaekhwa, the Korean monochrome painting movement. His paintings are made of burnt umber and ultramarine blue brushed onto raw canvas or linen, where they bleed into dark columns, and they are widely read as an art of reflection and meditation.
His paintings leave much of the raw ground bare, so stains, discolouration and handling marks on the unpainted areas are the main things to check. Works on paper also appear. Titles usually name the colours, as in Burnt Umber and Ultramarine, with the date, and exhibition labels help to place a work.
