Robert Zandvliet

Dutch painter working between landscape and abstraction, in broad strokes on large panels.

Robert Zandvliet was born at Terband in the Netherlands in 1970 and studied at the AKI in Enschede and the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. His early work isolated single mundane objects and film-still fragments at large scale on monochrome grounds; since then the paintings have moved steadily towards landscape treated as abstraction — horizons, tree lines, water and light rendered in a small number of broad, loaded, unhurried strokes of egg tempera or oil on canvas and panel. He works between the Netherlands and the United States and is well represented in Dutch museum collections.

A market principally in the Netherlands and Germany, developed through consistent gallery representation and institutional collecting rather than through the salerooms, so provenance to the original gallery and to a documented exhibition is the strongest documentation most works carry. Large paintings lead. Egg tempera on panel is the recurring technical point: it is matt, thin and absorbent, cannot be varnished or cleaned conventionally, and marks permanently, so condition should be assessed with that in mind. Works on paper are numerous.

If you own a work by Robert Zandvliet

Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation costs nothing and commits you to nothing.
