Bio
Robert Zandvliet was born at Terband in the Netherlands in 1970 and studied at the art academy in Kampen and at De Ateliers in Amsterdam. His early work isolated single everyday objects, a hairpin, a rear-view mirror, a cinema screen, at large scale; since then the paintings have moved steadily towards landscape treated as abstraction — horizons, tree lines, water and light rendered in a small number of broad, loaded, unhurried strokes of egg tempera or oil on canvas and panel. He lives in Rotterdam, works in Haarlem and is well represented in Dutch museum collections.
A market principally in the Netherlands and Germany, developed through consistent gallery representation and institutional collecting rather than through the salerooms, so provenance to the original gallery and to a documented exhibition is the strongest documentation most works carry. Large paintings lead. Egg tempera on panel is the recurring technical point: it is matt, thin and absorbent, cannot be varnished or cleaned conventionally, and marks permanently, so condition should be assessed with that in mind. Works on paper are numerous.

Zandvliet won the Prix de Rome for painting in 1994, the year he finished at De Ateliers, and has since won the Charlotte Köhler Prize and, in 2004, the Wolvecamp Prize. The paintings of single everyday objects were first shown at Witte de With in Rotterdam in 1996, and in 2012 the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague, now the Kunstmuseum, gave him a large solo exhibition, I owe you the truth in painting.
His work is in the Stedelijk Museum and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Kunstmuseum Den Haag, De Pont in Tilburg, the Dordrechts Museum, the Fries Museum and the Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst Antwerpen. His galleries include Peter Blum in New York, Bernhard Knaus in Frankfurt and Galerie Onrust in Amsterdam.
