Josef Zenk
A name we are asked about, and one where identifying the work comes before valuing it.
Josef Zenk is a name that reaches us through owners and through the trade rather than through the exhibition record, and we would rather say that plainly than write a biography we cannot stand behind. Names of this kind are common in the European market: an artist may be well documented in one regional archive and almost absent from the international literature, or the name on a work may belong to more than one hand, or to a signature that has been read wrongly. None of that makes a work uninteresting. It makes identification the first job rather than the last.
Where the record is thin, a valuation begins further back than usual. What the work physically is — support, medium, ground, stretcher, any labels, stamps, inscriptions or old framing on the reverse — will normally place it within a period and a region before any name does, and the back of a picture is routinely more informative than the front. From there the question is whether the name attaches to a documented body of work, and where.
