Rude Copper
Widely described as the first screenprint Banksy released. Its interest to collectors rests less on the image than on its position — the beginning of the print output the entire secondary market is now built on.

Unverified — Edition figures are compiled from publicly circulated references and have not been verified against primary records. “First release” is the settled view of the trade rather than a documented fact we have independently confirmed.
The edition figure understates the scarcity
An edition of 250 sounds like a lot until you consider what happened to those 250 sheets. They were sold cheaply in 2002 to people who liked the picture, at a point when nobody was treating this as a market. They went up with tape, in clip frames, in student flats.
Twenty-plus years later a meaningful proportion are damaged, faded, trimmed or lost, and an unknown number are held by original buyers with no intention of selling. The effective supply of good examples is well below the nominal edition — which is why condition premiums on early prints are steeper than the general market rules would predict.
If you have owned it since 2002
Do not reframe it, clean it or flatten it before speaking to someone. Well-meant intervention destroys more value in early prints than neglect does. Photograph it as it is, and ask first.
Before you buy or sell one
- Condition is doing more work here than on any later release. A clean early print is a genuinely scarce object; a tired one is not.
- Look specifically for old mounting damage — tape residue, hinge marks, staining at the corners. Twenty years of amateur framing leaves traces.
- Measure the sheet. Early prints were more often trimmed to fit a frame someone already owned.
- Provenance to an original 2002 purchase adds real weight, and is worth chasing if any paperwork survives.
