Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. Bio
Imran Qureshi was born in Hyderabad, Pakistan, in 1972, studied miniature painting at the National College of Arts in Lahore and teaches it there. His small paintings keep the materials and precision of the Mughal tradition, gouache and gold leaf on handmade wasli paper, while bringing in the violence of the present; from the 1990s he also moved into large paintings and installations. In those, red acrylic splashed and spread across floors, courtyards and walls reads at first as blood and on a closer look resolves into fine, painted foliage and flowers, a pairing of death and renewal he has returned to again and again. Blessings Upon the Land of My Love, made in a courtyard for the Sharjah Biennial in 2011, won one of its prizes, and in 2013 he covered the roof garden of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York for its annual commission. The same year he was Deutsche Bank's Artist of the Year, with his first solo exhibition in Europe at the Deutsche Bank KunstHalle in Berlin.
The site-specific installations are not sold, so the market is in the miniatures, works on paper and canvases. Miniatures on wasli, with gouache and gold leaf, are sensitive to light, damp and handling, and should be framed with conservation materials. A work's date and series, and a provenance through Corvi-Mora in London, Thaddaeus Ropac or one of his Pakistani galleries, are the main reference points.
