Lorenzo Quinn
Sculpts hands — holding, reaching, rising out of a Venetian canal to hold up a building.
Lorenzo Quinn was born in Rome in 1966, the son of the actor Anthony Quinn, studied at the American Academy of Fine Arts in New York and acted before committing to sculpture. The hand is his subject almost to the exclusion of everything else, used as a straightforward emblem of human agency: Support, installed for the 2017 Venice Biennale, had two enormous hands rise out of the Grand Canal to hold up the wall of the Ca' Sagredo hotel as an image of climate change. Building Bridges followed in 2019. He works in Barcelona and shows principally through commercial galleries.
The market is led by monumental commissions and public installations, which rarely trade, and rests commercially on editioned bronze and resin sculptures produced at several scales from tabletop upwards — cast number, size, material and finish are what a valuation turns on, and the same composition exists at many sizes. Certificates from the studio are expected. Gallery retail prices and secondary values diverge in this segment more than owners generally anticipate. Patina and surface condition matter, and repatination reduces value.
