Danish-Israeli painter of a private, deliberately childlike world in seven colours.
Tal R was born Tal Rosenzweig in Tel Aviv in 1967 to a Danish mother and an Israeli father, and grew up in Copenhagen, where he still works. He paints in a deliberately naive, flattened manner drawn from folk art, children's drawing, shop signs and Danish domestic pattern, and for years restricted himself to a fixed palette he called Kolbojnik, a Hebrew word for leftovers. The subjects are brothels, shop fronts, forests, chairs and his own studio, treated with the same weight. He works in oil, rabbit-skin glue pigment, collage, sculpture and design, and has produced clothing and furniture.
A market centred on Scandinavia and Germany, with the large paintings in pigment and rabbit-skin glue leading it. That medium is the main conservation concern: it is matt, absorbent, water-sensitive and cannot be cleaned or varnished, so any moisture damage or surface mark is permanent. Works on paper, collages and the crayon drawings are numerous and are the accessible part of the output. There is a substantial print output in etching, woodcut and screenprint. Signature is usually on the reverse, with the title.
