What a work by Mona Hatoum is worth

Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio

Mona Hatoum was born in Beirut in 1952 to Palestinian parents from Haifa. She studied graphic design at Beirut University College and was on a visit to London in 1975 when the Lebanese Civil War broke out and left her unable to return. She stayed, training at the Byam Shaw School of Art and the Slade between 1975 and 1981, and she lives in London. Her early work was performance, using her own body to confront audiences with politics, as in Roadworks of 1985, when she walked barefoot through the streets of Brixton with black boots tied to her ankles. She later turned to sculpture, installation and video, often taking furniture, kitchen utensils and other domestic objects and making them strange or threatening. Her work deals with the body, with exile and displacement, and with the dangers and confines of home.

Her output includes unique sculptures and installations, editioned sculptures and objects, works on paper and prints, so the edition number, certificate and dimensions should all be checked. Works in glass, metal and other fragile materials need careful packing and can be costly to repair, and installation instructions, where they exist, are part of the work.
