Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. Bio
Stanley William Hayter (1901–1988) was born in Hackney, London, the son of the painter William Harry Hayter. He took a degree in chemistry and geology at King's College London and worked in Iran for the Anglo-Persian Oil Company from 1922 to 1925. In 1926 he went to Paris to study at the Académie Julian and met the engraver Joseph Hecht, who introduced him to engraving with the burin. In 1927 he founded an experimental printmaking workshop, named Atelier 17 in 1933 after its new address at 17 rue Campagne-Première, where artists including Picasso, Miró, Giacometti and Calder worked. His own prints of the period, in engraving, soft-ground etching and other textural techniques, drew on Surrealist ideas of automatic line. In 1940 he moved to New York and re-founded Atelier 17 at the New School, where Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko made prints and where colour printing, including viscosity printing, came to the fore. He returned to Paris in 1950 and re-established the workshop, and he wrote New Ways of Gravure (1949) and About Prints (1962).
Most of his work is prints, engravings, etchings and colour prints, many made at Atelier 17. Note the edition number, signature and paper, check that the plate mark is crisp, and look for fading, since his later colour prints use bright and fluorescent inks. A painting should come with a gallery invoice or other paperwork.
