Teiji Hayama valuation
Ghosted, luminous portraits in which Marilyn keeps reappearing.
Teiji Hayama was born in Japan in 1975, grew up partly in Europe and works from Switzerland. The paintings are portraits handled in soft, luminous, almost photographic gradients with elongated features and a spectral quality, and they return repeatedly to a small set of cultural icons — Marilyn Monroe above all — treated less as celebrities than as apparitions.
Unique oil paintings lead, with editions and works on paper below. The smoothly blended surfaces are the condition issue: these are thin, evenly graduated films of paint without impasto, and abrasion, uneven varnish or a stretcher-bar mark reads across them immediately. They are not surfaces that tolerate casual handling or cleaning. Editions reproduce the gradients closely enough that support and markings are what identify an original, and certificates should stay with an editioned work.
