Nick Smith is a British artist whose signature method is collage from colour swatches: well-known images — old master paintings, film stills, album covers, pop iconography — reassembled from hundreds of individual paper chips, each carrying a printed name or caption, so that the picture resolves at a distance and dissolves into text and colour up close. The Chromatic series is the best known body of it.
Unique collage works lead, with editions below them reproducing the same images. The distinction is crucial and not always obvious in a photograph, since a printed edition reproduces the chip structure convincingly: the original is a physical assembly with hundreds of separate pieces of paper and the edition is a flat sheet. Originals raise real conservation questions — adhesive, lifting, light on coloured papers — and should be framed to conservation standard. Certificates accompany the editions.
