Slawn is Olaolu Slawn, born in Lagos in 1999 and working in London, who arrived through skate and streetwear rather than through art school and built an audience at a speed that has few parallels. The paintings are loose, cartoonish, deliberately crude figures in bright acrylic and marker, and the work has run alongside collaborations with brands, a skate label and the design of the 2023 BRIT Award — the youngest artist to have done it. The rise has been fast enough that the secondary market is still finding its level.
Unique acrylic works on canvas lead, with a body of works on paper, editions and a large volume of collaborative product below them. This is a young market that has moved quickly in both directions, which makes date of acquisition and documentation unusually relevant to a valuation — where a work came from and when is often as material as what it is. Original invoices and any gallery paperwork are worth keeping together with the work.
A market with almost no auction record
Most artists on this list can be measured against public results. This one cannot, or not yet: the work has moved overwhelmingly through drops, direct sales and collaborations rather than through salerooms, so there is very little in the public record to compare a piece against. That is a statement about the market's age rather than about the work.
The practical consequence is that documentation carries more weight here than comparables do. What a piece is, when it was acquired and from whom will usually decide a valuation, because there is no long run of results to fall back on. Keep the original invoice, the drop confirmation, the collaboration paperwork, or the message thread if that is genuinely all there is — it is common in this market and it is better raised at the start than discovered later.
