What a work by Alfred Sisley is worth

Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio

Alfred Sisley was born in Paris in 1839 to English parents and kept his British nationality all his life. Sent to London to learn commerce, he came back to painting, and in Charles Gleyre's studio in the early 1860s met Monet, Renoir and Bazille. When his father's business failed after the Franco-Prussian War he lost his income, and he spent the rest of his life painting the river towns west of Paris, Louveciennes, Marly and Sèvres, and from 1880 the villages along the Loing around Moret, in a light, even touch. He showed in four of the eight Impressionist exhibitions. He died at Moret-sur-Loing in 1899, poor and little recognised, having applied for French citizenship too late to receive it.

The work is almost entirely landscape in oil, and the paintings of the 1870s, the years around the first Impressionist exhibitions, are generally the most sought, with the Moret pictures of the 1880s and 1890s forming the larger later group. The catalogue raisonné by François Daulte, published in 1959, is the reference, and a new edition is being prepared by the Comité Alfred Sisley; inclusion is the normal expectation for a painting. Pastels and drawings are relatively few.

Hampton Court, Port-Marly and Penarth

In 1874 Sisley spent several months in England, where he painted the Thames at Hampton Court and Molesey. His views of the floods at Port-Marly in 1876 are among his best-known pictures.

In 1897 he went to Wales, married his long-standing companion Eugénie Lescouezec at Cardiff, and painted the coast at Penarth and Langland Bay, his last group of seascapes.
