Send photographs and whatever paperwork came with it. The first question is what the work actually is — edition or unique, when, and in what condition — because everything else follows from the answer. A valuation is free, made online from the photographs you send, and it commits you to nothing. We act for sellers across the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.

Bio
Walter Sickert was born in Munich in 1860, the son of a Danish painter, and grew up in London after the family settled there in 1868. He was an actor before he became a painter, spent less than a year at the Slade, and then worked as pupil and etching assistant to Whistler; in 1883 he met Degas in Paris, an influence that lasted all his life. He painted the music halls of London, Dieppe, where he lived for long periods, and Venice, and from 1905 the dim interiors and nudes of Camden Town, which made him the central figure of the Camden Town Group formed in 1911. In his later years he painted from press photographs, long before that became common practice. He died at Bathampton in 1942.
Sickert was prolific and worked in series, and paintings, drawings and etchings all come to market regularly. Wendy Baron's catalogue raisonné of the paintings is the reference, and drawings can be compared with the large holding at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. A provenance through his dealers or early collectors helps.
Whistler, Dieppe and Camden Town
The Camden Town Murder series of 1908 and 1909, a clothed man and a nude woman in a shabby bedroom, took its title from a notorious killing of 1907, and some of the pictures were first shown under other titles, among them What Shall We Do for the Rent?
Lord Beaverbrook formed the largest collection of his paintings, now at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in Fredericton, New Brunswick, and Tate Britain held a major retrospective in 2022.
